UmSo is a speech practice application designed to help young people reduce filler words through daily practice and immediate feedback. The goal was to create a learning experience that makes clear communication feel approachable, supportive, and easy to build, without turning speaking practice into a stressful or intimidating process.
I believe speech tools shouldn’t feel cold or corrective. For UmSo, I approached the product as an emotional experience, one that helps users feel aware, encouraged, and confident as they practice.
To make the experience engaging and human for a younger audience, I focused on simplifying the overall flow by removing unnecessary steps and prioritizing the core feature: real-time filler word awareness. I designed a focused practice journey that keeps users in the moment, supported by subtle micro-interactions, sound, haptics, and friendly colorful character elements that represent different learning behaviors and speaking patterns. This also helps users feel more connected to the experience and making the product more memorable.
By combining immediate feedback with a warm, minimal interface, UmSo makes speech practice something users can return to daily, without pressure, guilt, or overwhelm.
